The Romulus school board suspended Acting Superintendent Flinnoia Hall for ten days without pay on Thursday, citing violations of the district's code of professional standards.
Hall called an African American district employee a racial slur and another profane slur during an open school board meeting Feb. 10th. Hall is also African American.
That prompted the Romulus Education Association and Michigan Education Association to send board members a letter on Feb. 16th, calling for Hall to be disciplined.
Sarah Carter, President of the Romulus Education Association, called Hall's 10-day suspension "a slap on the wrist." She said moving forward, the school board needs to let Hall go when his contract expires in June, and "immediately" start searching for a new superintendent "to get someone that is professional, and qualified, and is able to control their anger.”
“That is not the kind of behavior and conduct a role model engages in," Carter said. "That’s not the type of conduct we want to see in a school leader.”
Romulus Community Schools spokeswoman Dawn Jamison said Hall has been with the district for six years, and served as Acting Superintendent for one.
The district said in a written statement that" the Board took appropriate action commensurate with the seriousness of the situation. As the District moves forward, the Board will be considering all options.
