An old industrial site in Flint has been chosen to become Michigan’s next state park.
The Whitmer administration wants to spend more than $26 million in federal COVID relief funds to turn the former “Chevy in the Hole” site into Michigan’s 104th state park.
Since 2015, the site has beentransformedfrom a barren stretch of concrete into a city park. The project involved piling tons of topsoil on top of the brownfield left behind by the former auto assembly plant.
Ron Olson is the chief of the Parks and Recreation Division for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He said the plan includes the Flint River.
“Right now there’s a concept. And it’s a vision,” said Olson. “And there’s been a lot of ideas that have been suggested.”
Olson says the DNR has experience maintaining state parks that are linked to Michigan’s industrial past.
The new park would be the state's 104th.
Genesee County is the only county in Michigan without a state park.
