A new report says a growing percentage of Michigan’s children live in poverty.
The annual Kids Count Data Bookis produced by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The foundation has been producing the annual Kids Count report for 30 years.
The 2019 report ranks Michigan 32nd in the nation for overall child well-being.
Alicia Guevara Warren is the state Kids Count project director. She says Michigan’s children are disproportionately affected by poverty.
“You would expect since we have been in an economic recovery that things would be getting better for folks,” says Warren. “But unfortunately what we see in the data is that this growing inequality gap.”
Warren says there are positive things in this year’s report, including improving graduation rates and declining teen births.
