An Upper Peninsula man has been accused of participating in the January 6 storming of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
Karl Dresch of Calumet appeared by video before a U.S. magistrate Wednesday, one day following his arrest.
A federal criminal complaint, with a supportingstatement of facts, alleges that Dresch was part of an effort to keep lawmakers from certifying President Joe Biden's win.
The federal filing points to photos and messages Dresch allegedly texted or posted on social media before, during and after the unlawful invasion of the Capitol.
The criminal complaint charges Dresch with three federal crimes. The most serious is obstructing an official proceeding which carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
Prosecutors have filed a motion to keep Dresch in jail pending trial. A detention hearing will be scheduled no later than Monday to determine whether Dresch will be released from jail before trial.
